Playa Tamarindo has a very nice beach break and rivermouth surfing formed by the Tamarindo Esturary. The surf is pretty predictable waist high to head high. Being a typical beach break, it is also a safe location for beginners. As a matter of fact, Tamarindo has several "surf camps" in town with Witches Rock Surf Camp probably be ing the most popular. There are a few rocks/reef along the beach. So, it is best to ask a local for information. Just to the south of the main surf area, the rocks are easily visible at low tide, but the rocks just to the north at the river inlet pretty much stay submerged.

The town itself is pretty nice but basic. Almost all of the tourist traffic on this beach is surfing-related. There are plenty of inexpensive hotels, restaurants, and bars. During high tourist season (Christmas) it can get unplesantly crowded unless you are into the party scene. A recommended time to go is just before or after. Also of note, even during the rainy season, the the surf is just as good.

There is surfing nearby at Playa Grande (north), Playa Negra (south), and Playa Avellana (south). Each of these spots can be reached by road or beach. For example, Playa Avellana is about 15km south by road or just under 10km by beach. Playa Grande is just across the Tamarindo Esturary (few hundred yards) or 18km by road.
