Impounds the Pecos River approximately 121 mi E of Albuquerque. Follow direction signs through city of Santa Rosa to the lake. The visitor center contains an interesting display on project area.Ten thousand years ago, PaleoIndians hunted mammoth and bison throughout the area of what is now known as Santa Rosa. Today, Santa Rosa Dam and Lake offers 25 miles of shoreline with abundant recreational activities for all visitors. Boating, fishing, and swimming are the most popular activities, as well as camping, hiking and birding. During the winter months, migrating birds, including warblers, raptors, various waterfowl and bald eagles come and roost at Santa Rosa Lake.

The Corps of Engineers Visitor Center at Santa Rosa boasts a diorama of the dam that includes a section of the control tower and its inner workings. Archeological artifacts and early Native American history are also on display. Interpretive activities are available. Santa Rosa Dam, an earthen structure, was built in 1981 and is the first major dam on the Pecos River. Federal Recreation Passport Program is not applicable at this project.

Directions

Santa Rosa Dam and Lake is located in the north central region of New Mexico and is highly accessible from any direction. The project is 117 miles east of Albuquerque via Interstate 40, 66 miles southeast of Las Vegas, NM, 58 miles east of Tucumcari and 171 miles east of Amarillo, TX. Santa Rosa Dam and Lake is located seven miles north of the town of Santa Rosa via State Route 91.
