The Western Maryland Rail is 19 mile paved path that begins at Big Pool and ends at Pearre, Maryland. This trail paralells part of the 184 mile C&O Canal Towpath. It is possible to cross over from the C&O Canal Towpath in several places. (The map featured on this run also explains how to travel between the two trails by car at Ernestville Rd.) The WMR is also extremely accessible as it paralells part of I-70 for several miles between Big Pool and Hancock.

For those of you who like to measure your miles, there are mile makers along this path. This is a beautiful trail, particularly in the fall when the leaves turn.

To start at the South end at Big Pool, take exit 12 off of I-70 (this is also the exit for Route 56) and go to parking area there.

To start at the North end at Hancock, take exit 3 off of I-70 (also the exit for Route 144 and Hancock), then go to Main St and Pennsylvania Ave. Cross over trail then cross over C&O Towpath to free parking along the Potomac River.
