This run goes from Schultz Pass, up the Waterline Road to the snowshed cabin in the Inner Basin (the Caldera of the San Francisco Peaks). It is a gradual uphill and a fast, but long descent! This run goes by thick stands of Aspen and several interesting volcanic features, including a tunnel about 3 miles up. The run can be made into about any distance since it is an out and back. The views of the volcanic cinder fields east of Flagstaff (including Sunset Crater) are breathtaking (so is the altitude!) Best done in Fall when the Aspen are changing colors.

Drive north out of Flagstaff on US 180 to FR 420 (Schultz Pass Road - Just past Museum of Northern Arizona) Drive 6 miles east on FR 420 (bear to left at Elden lookout road) to the trailhead at a parking lot on the south side of the road at Schultz Tank Trailhead. Run east on Schultz Pass Road, past the Weatherford Trialhead. The Waterline Road is your next left (about 1/8 mile from the trailhead).
