Runner's World calls it the best run in Baton Rouge - a flat, 4-mile, paved path circling University Lake that takes you past elegant Old South mansions that are now fraternity and sorority houses. Live oaks shade more than half of the loop (a major plus in Louisiana summers), and egrets, herons, and Muscovy ducks fill the waters. At its north end, the path links via a land bridge to a 1.75-mile loop around smaller City Park Lake. Combine this Two Lakes Figure Eight with the 1-mile perimeter path of the City Park golf course, and you'll total just over a 10-K. There are two privies, several water fountains, and Southern college students to ogle along the course.

Start at the parking lot for Baton Rouge Beach Park, at the south end of University Lake.
