FLAT path starting on the campus of High Point University.

Start behind the Millis Center (HPU basketball stadium) next to "the Painted Rock." Run towards the Tunnel. Follow path past High Point Central HS till path ends. Turn around and come back to the rock. This is approxiametly 3 miles.

Add extra mileage by looping the campus (if you follow the concrete path around campus, then the run is about 1.5 miles). Run around the athletic fields for soft grass.

FROM THE EAST (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill and points east) Travel south on I-85 through Greensboro and the I-40/85 split. Exit Business 85 (green shield) and then exit US Highway 311 north and turn right onto Main Street. Turn right onto College Drive. Turn left onto Montlieu Avenue. Turn right onto West College Drive and go up the hill. The Millis Center and other athletic facilities will be on your right.

FROM THE NORTH (Southwest Virginia, West Virginia) Travel south on I-77 across the NC state line to I-74 east (toward Mount Airy/Winston-Salem). Exit US Highway 52 south. Take 52 south to Winston-Salem, and take I-40 east to exit 196 (US Highway 311 south). At High Point, take the South High Point exit (311/Main Street). Turn left onto Hartley Drive (at Wal-Mart/Chick-fil-A). Hartley Drive becomes North College Drive at Oak Hollow Mall. Continue and turn right onto Montlieu Avenue. Turn right onto West College Drive and go up the hill. The Millis Center and other athletic facilities will be on your right.

FROM THE SOUTH (Charlotte and points south) Travel north on I-85 to Exit 87 (Business 85 north/green shield). Follow Business 85 about 23 miles to the US Highway 311 north exit. Turn left on Main Street, and then right onto College Drive. Turn left onto Montlieu Avenue. Turn right onto West College Drive and go up the hill. The Millis Center and other athletic facilities will be on your right.

FROM THE WEST (Winston-Salem and points west)
Travel east on I-40 past Winston-Salem to Highway 311 South (Exit 196). Follow 311 south to High Point and take the South High Point exit (311/Main Street). Turn left onto Hartley Drive (at Wal-Mart/Chick-fil-A). Hartley Drive becomes North College Drive at Oak Hollow Mall. Continue and turn right onto Montlieu Avenue. I use this course for my shorter weekday runs. The folks at High Point University have never bothered me about parking near the painted rock (yet) and there are always other people, mostly walkers and bikers, using the course.

A couple of points to keep in mind:

I've not measured this trail, but I feel it is longer than 3 miles. There is quite a bit of new construction, and it extends all the way to Deep River Road. My guess is 4 miles total out and back.

After you cross two roads and a small bridge, the path forks. Stay left toward the woods and another bridge. Other than that it is well marked.

There are two tunnels on this path. The first is right at the beginning (you can see it from the painted rock). The second is about 80% of the way to the end and is much longer, I'd say 50 yards or more. This tunnel goes under the new 321 bypass and has NO LIGHT. I would not want to run through it after dark for fear of tripping or something worse. Even in the late evening it gets pretty dark in the middle.

The only hill to speak of is right at the end, just past the second tunnel. It is a short but somewhat steep one maybe 125-150 yards.

Overall this is a good run, and you probably wouldn't mind running it twice to get a more longish run in due to the varied scenery.
