The trail runs between the Meramec River and some elevated train tracks. It is fairly flat and very pleasant. Castlewood State Park attracts quite a few mountain bikers so be aware that there may be some bikers on the trail. Near the farthest point on the trail, there is a connection to the Al Foster Meramec Greenway Trail. This connection was unmarked (as of 12/29/04), but you can identify the trail by the fact that it is a fine gravel trail as opposed to the dirt trail you will have been running on.

Castlewood State Park is located directly west of St. Louis. From the I-270 loop, exit at Dougherty Ferry Road and go west about 1.5 miles. Turn right (west) at Big Bend Road for about 3 miles. Then turn left (south) on Ries Road. Ries Road is a steep road up and then down. When it dead-ends, turn left into Castlewood State Park. You will go past a Ranger Station on your right, over a bridge, past a field on your left, and under a railroad bridge. Just past the railroad bridge, there is a parking lot on your right. Park here. The trail begins from the parking lot.
