The 50K distance is perfect for your first ultra or a fast ultra. It may be just beyond marathon distance, but the extra few miles can hurt if you are not prepared.

If this is your first ultra, I would recommend running marathon distance (in training or a preparation race) at least once. I would also mix in several training runs over 20 miles in distance. Take your usual marathon-training long runs and tack on about 20%.

If you are a seasoned marathon runner, you are in great shape and probably know what to expect. Just make sure you can handle food intake on your longer runs as "maintaining the engine" is really important when doing ultras.
