Boulder is blessed with not only having trails, bike paths, and climbing; They also have a great trout stream and kayak park running right thru the downtown area.

Middle Boulder Creek starts way up high on the Continential Divide and flows through the town of Nederland before it gets to Boulder. Here in Nederland it is dammed up and forms Barker Reservoir which provides water to the City of Boulder. From the base of the dam it flows down Boulder Canyon about 8-9 miles and comes out right in the downtown area of Boulder. The river follows Hwy 119/Canyon Ave most of the way from Boulder to Nederland and there is plenty of public access and road pulloffs the entire way.

Kayaking

There are several kayak runs in this river, but the most popular feature is the whitewater park. The main obstacle is people tubing down the very same sections.

Fishing

In the lower half of Boulder Canyon and Through Boulder, you will find mostly brown trout averaging 8 - 12". The higher up you go towards Barker Reservoir and Nederland you will find more rainbow and brook trout populating the stream.

Flies and Hatches

  • Winter - small Copper John
  • Summer - BWO, Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Adams
  • Fall - BWO, Elk Hair Caddis

Access

You can find access the entire way, but one of the best sections is right in town. Try the section between 6th and 9th - park in the Justice Center parking lot off 6th Street. Another great area is in and above Eben G. Fine Park on the far west end of town. This section also has a great section devoted a a kayak play park.
