I grew up outdoors in the Adirondack Park of New York, running up creeks and through the forest. Started hiking more seriously after getting driver's license. Started trail running occasionally in 2001 and I am finally getting more regular about it. I still just love exploring around outside and seeing how quick I can do it. The way I look at my trail running is as fast hiking because I'm carrying less weight. I've hiked 30 miles with 8000 feet of elevation gain/loss in 10 hours carrying a 20-30 pound daypack(water weight varied greatly), I'm just working on my speed and cutting back on weight so that I can do 50 miles in under 10 hours.
