From the South Mesa Trailhead: Run the Mesa Trail as it crosses South Boulder Creek and climbs gently, passing the Big Bluestem trail. At 1.6 miles the trail forks. Stay left, heading for Shadow Canyon. Climb for another 0.8 mile to a creek crossing at an old abandoned shack. Turn left onto the Shadow Canyon trail and climb very steeply for 1.1 miles to a saddle. At the saddle, turn left and continue climbing for another 0.4 miles to the blocky 8,549' summit of South Boulder Peak.
Enjoy the stellar view from "SBP". Bear Peak is directly north, and Eldorado Canyon and Shirttail Peak are to the South.
Return the way you came.
Ascent Variation: As soon as the Mesa trail crosses South Boulder Creek, turn left onto either the Homestead or Towhee trails. The singletrack trails roll gently before rejoining the Mesa trail 0.5 mile from the start of Shadow Canyon. Continue as for above.1.7 miles west of Hwy 93 on Eldorado Springs Drive, the trailhead is on the north side of the road.
From Boulder: Travel south on Broadway/Hwy 93 out of town to the intersection of Broadway/Hwy 93 and Co. 170/Eldorado Springs Drive. Turn right, west and travel 1.7 miles.
From Denver: Exit Hwy 36 at the Foothills Parkway/Table Mesa exit. Take the Table Mesa exit and turn left, west. Continue west to Broadway/Hwy 93 and turn left, south. Travel to the intersection of Broadway/Hwy 93 and Co. 170/Eldorado Springs Drive. Turn right, west and travel 1.7 miles.
