This short run gains some serious altitude in just one mile. If you are looking for a hill workout, this is a good place to start.
This run starts at the footbridge just north of the parking area on the Mount Sanitas Trail. Take this very steep and rocky trail 1.4 miles (1,310 ft gain) to the summit of Sanitas. Anything under 20 minutes to the summit is smokin'! From the summit you can look down at the wide Sanitas Valley Trail to your east. That is your next objective. Find a trail that descends the summit on the east side of the mountain. Take this rocky winding trail down the mountain to the head of the valley. Here the you connect to the Sanitas Valley Trail. You can just run down the gravel hiking path for 1.0 mile as a recovery and back to your car, or you can take the Dakota Ridge Trail down. The Dakota Rigde Trail parallels the Sanitas Valley Trail for 1.2 miles, but is a nice rocky singletrack instead on a gravel path.
Note- the distance listed is given for a descent down the Sanitas Valley Trail. The Dakota Ridge Trail is .2 miles longer and a bit slower.
From Broadway (Hwy. 93) turn west towards the mountains on Mapleton Ave. Take this approximately 2 miles until you pass Boulder Center for Sports Medicine (on your right). Parking for the Mount Sanitas Trailhead can be found .1 and .25 miles further on your right and additional parking a bit further on the left hand side of the road. Just look for all the parked cars. This is a popular area and should be easy to find.

Each year the Boulder Trail Runners puts on a Group Training Event - not a race, as this is OSMP land and no organized activities are allowed on it - to see how many laps individual runners can do in 12 hours. The record is 15 for men and 13 for women, as of 2004.
Rules: The "rules" are established by tradition.
(1) Each lap begins and ends at the bridge by the picnic shelter at the bottom of the south ridge (by the parking area). You must touch the railing of the bridge after each lap.
(2) You may run either direction (CW or CCW). You may switch directions at the start of any lap (that is, you don't have to run all laps in the same direction).
(3) You MUST touch the metal pole at the summit on each lap.
(4) Do not tell anyone that you are involved in a race! This is not a race! It is a disorganized group training run.
Join up with the BTR group and see what other fun you can have like this!

as reported in an email from Peter Bakwin,
I guess everyone who is going to has reported their results from the InSanitas 12 hour. I counted 21 people at the start, and I think 10-20 more showed up throughout the day. Great! We had some interesting new "records":
Galen Burrell ran a single lap in 30:56, then went on to finish 5 laps in 2:51. He probably gets the records for the fastest 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 laps.
Stephanie Ehret set a strong women's CR at 13 laps in 11:42:58.
The men's overall 12-hour record was not broken, and stands at 16 laps in 11:56:22.
OK, here's what I have:
