This 3.5 mile run is a longer variation of the standard Reservoir Lake Loop (2.1 miles). Running counter-clockwise, cross the dam and continue around the lake just as the Reservoir Lake loop. However at .5 miles into the run, take a right on a small gravel and sand trail. This trail will wander around some houses and along a stretch of road for about .6 miles before returning back to the Reservoir Lake loop. Finish up the last 1 mile on the Reservoir Lake Trail.
Other options would be to run both the Reservoir Lake Trail and Longleaf Trail in a figure-8 fashion to get a nice 4.6 mile run.
For more information on this park system, visit the Southern Pines recreation departmental website at www.southernpines.net/recreation.
From US1, get off at the exit for Pinehurst and Whispering Pines (State Road 2 and 22). From the exit, turn northeast and go .5 miles. Take a right onto State Road 22 (Central Drive). Follow Central Drive for 1.5 miles towards the airport and Sandhills Community College. The Reservoir Park entrance will be on your left. There is a large parking lot and trailhead another .5 miles further.
