This popular hill climb route gains over 1100 ft in just under 2 miles. A good goal is to run it under 25 minutes. To do this you pretty much have to run the whole thing - no walking.
Start at the ranger's station/main parking lot in Chautauqua Park. Run towards the mountains (west) on the Baseline Trail for .6 miles to the entrance of the Gregory Canyon Trailhead (the turn off for the trailhead parking at Flagstaff Road). Do not run up to the parking lot. Instead, run up the Flagstaff Trail. The trail crosses Flagstaff Road several times, so it is a good idea to have a leash for your pet.
Just below the summit, take a right on Range View Trail and follow this trail for approximately .2 miles to the Flagstaff Amphitheater. Stop your watch, you're done! Fastest known times are listed from the car to summit - return time not included.
Now to get back down to your car. You can either retrace your steps back down the Flagstaff Trail or keep running around the summit of Flagstaff and finish the complete Flagstaff Summit Loop which takes you back down to Chautaugua Park via Gregory Canyon.
To start from the north, from Broadway (Hwy. 93) take Baseline Road (west) to Chautauqua Park. Find a place to park which can be difficult on the weekends. Locate the ranger station at the southwest end of the parking lot. You will start your run here.
