The Water Tower Desert Race is one of the local run club (MMS) longest-running events -- Rosco entered this in 1978!

5 miles (approximately) of double- or single-track trail through the high desert -- arroyos, dodging cactus, please don't step on the snakes, mostly rolling terrain. save some energy for the couple of steep hills near the finish.

The entry fee is inexpensive, -- your main 'reward' is camaraderie and early enough in the day to go home and do yardwork (yeah, right).

From the Horizon Dr. exit/intersection with I-70, go north until Horizon 'morphs' into H road (DON'T go to the airport) -- heading west. after about a mile, turn right (north) on 27 1/2 Road. Go about 1.5 miles to start/finish area.

this event used to be across the road and was the "triple jump" as contestants would have to negotiate (among other things) three chasms where the old railroad grade had washed out. well, you could climb/detour around -- but faster and scarier to jump! gradually, each year, the erosional situation changed, more jumps, some jumps became too far for anyone except maybe carl lewis if he had a 2.5 or 3 mile run-up, and for some reason (does there always have to be a reason? maybe no reason...) the event was moved west with less jumps. supposedly this was for warren. warren is pretty adventurous, however. the run is like a roller coaster... up and down, and up over another 'spine' between arroyos in the desert. one (sometimes two... or ...) section is through a narrow canyon along the serpentine bottom.
