The I & M Canal path can be very beautiful to run. The best place to run it is through Lockport, IL. In Lockport, there is a park named Delwood Park. There is a very gruelingly huge hill to run and also you can run a trail that hooks up with the I & M Canal path. One of my favorites!!
The path stretches through out the middle of the state. If you don't like lockport, you can go through Joliet, Channahon, Morris, Ottawa, Utica, or La Salle Peru. All really awesome runs. The Canal trail itself is pretty flat but, all along the way you can cut off and into different parks for fun trail running or hill workouts.
