Don't be fooled by the title of this race, it is a tough one! It starts at 10,000 ft. elevation and drops over 2000 ft. but remember, running downhill fast at 10,000 ft elevation is still running fast at 10,000 ft. elevation. The scenery is, of course, spectacular. There is a really gnarly downhill drop from mile ten to twelve, and that makes you totally wasted on the last mile which has gently rolling hills. I have never been so exhausted during the last mile of a race as this. It feels like the way you felt during the last mile of those races you ran your freshman year in high school. Don't say I didn't warn you!
It is the highest downhill half marathon in the country---- beginning at 10,630 feet and traveling over a rolling hill descent to 8400 feet! The half marathon begins at Loveland Ski Area and travels the first five miles through a Forest Service area of wetlands and natural waterfalls on a non-motorized dirt road built to sustain the weight of an ambulance! The second 4.4 miles travel from Bakerville to Silver Plume along a paved frontage road with amazing views of the Continental Divide and mining remnants. The last portion of the trail travels from Silver Plume to Georgetown on a paved bike trail (and paved road) with scenic views of the Georgetown Loop Railroad and the largest Bighorn Sheep herd in the State! The race ends in downtown Georgetown where festivities will take place which include live music, beer garden, gravity jumps for kids, and more freebees than you can imagine.
Coming from Denver take I-70 Westbound
Coming from Vail, take I-70 Eastbound
Exit #228, Georgetown and head toward the gas stations.
Take a left at the stop sign onto Argentine Street.
This road will take you to Georgetown Lake where you will park and catch the shuttles to the Starting Lines!
All racers will be shuttled to the start lines from the Georgetown Lake for the half marathon/relay/5K races. There will be NO PARKING AT ALL AT THE 5K STARTING LINE. Some parking is allowed at the half marathon/relay start line, however, there is NO SHUTTLING TO THIS PARKING AREA AFTER THE RACE.
