If you?re a runner or cyclist and like traveling and exploring new and different areas, enjoy clean, clear air, wide open spaces, long summer days, and vast stretches highways with virtually no traffic then the Run for the Border Marathon is for you.
It?s promoted by Flatland Promotions and ADVENTURESCAPES Magazine.Com. It will be held over the Memorial Day Weekend in Plentywood, Montana, May 29, 2004 and is part of the 2004 Flatland Border Challenge Series (information and registration services for all Flatland events is available through Active.Com)
Plentywood is located in the furthest Northeast corner of Montana in Sheridan County. It?s a rich farm country with a population of less than 2000. It\'s noted more for producing the country\'s best hard durum wheat, which makes the best pasta, than it is for its fitness sports. But what would a race be without the traditional pasta parties?
Highway 16 is the race track. It?s a 15 mile straight shot from Plentywood to the Canadian border. The landscape on either side of the road is endless wheat fields spread out over rolling hills. Montana\'s nickname is the Big Sky Country and it doesn\'t get any bigger than it does over the plains. The Highway is only 2 years old, so it\'s in great shape with wide shoulders and no sight impairments in any direction.
If a full marathon (26.2 miles) isn?t exactly your idea of fun, you might want to try a half marathon, or find some friends and enter as a team, or run the 10K or a 5K. There are 4 men?s and women?s age divisions for each event. Division I 18-30, Division II 31-40, Division III 41-50, Division IV 50+
Lodging is one of the major concerns -- only one motel. However, we will make every effort to help out with accommodations. There are plenty of camp areas throughout the area and near the race site. Williston ND is only 90 miles away and Sidney Montana is 83 miles away. Both have niceging accommodations and other services.
Portable showers and rest room facilities w l be available at convenient locations. A hospitality room will be maintained and staffed to answer any questions and help out with any emergency situations that may arise.
There will be something for everyone to do over the weekend ranging from flatwater kayak demonstrations, races, volleyball and softball tournaments, food booths, beer gardens, dancing, bike tours and much more. So bring the entire family and be prepared to have some fun and experience prairie country hospitality!
