I run this trail everytime I go to Las Vegas. It's a little higher in elevation than the Strip; the low point on the loop is about 5000' and the high point is about 6000'; or so I'm told. I usually run it counter-clockwise starting at the cooking mounds. I have run it from the picnic area down the hill, but that's the low point, so either way you have to grind up about 900' at the start of the run. The cooking mounds are probably halfway up in elevation, so you only have to climb the first mile and a half or so before a nice long downhill, then another mile or more climb back to the parking lot.
