I use this course for my shorter weekday runs. The folks at High Point University have never bothered me about parking near the painted rock (yet) and there are always other people, mostly walkers and bikers, using the course.
A couple of points to keep in mind:
I've not measured this trail, but I feel it is longer than 3 miles. There is quite a bit of new construction, and it extends all the way to Deep River Road. My guess is 4 miles total out and back.
After you cross two roads and a small bridge, the path forks. Stay left toward the woods and another bridge. Other than that it is well marked.
There are two tunnels on this path. The first is right at the beginning (you can see it from the painted rock). The second is about 80% of the way to the end and is much longer, I'd say 50 yards or more. This tunnel goes under the new 321 bypass and has NO LIGHT. I would not want to run through it after dark for fear of tripping or something worse. Even in the late evening it gets pretty dark in the middle.
The only hill to speak of is right at the end, just past the second tunnel. It is a short but somewhat steep one maybe 125-150 yards.
Overall this is a good run, and you probably wouldn't mind running it twice to get a more longish run in due to the varied scenery.
