This route begins at the start of the Nature Trail accross from the Education Center. The nature trail is approximately 1.2 miles long. The trail is sandy with jungle-like shrubs in parts. In some sections, the trail is a dense Southern pine forest with pine needles padding the ground.
Several wooden bridges and overlooks are along the trail, as well as "you are here" maps kindly provided by a local boy scout troop.
At the end of the trail, turn right into the parking lot and head to the boardwalk that leads to the beach. Go left (north) up the beach towards the jetty. You'll run about 1.5 miles to the jetty. The beach is beautiful and uncrowded since it is located in a State park. Once on the Jetty, head towards the end. Turn around and retrace your way back. The total out-and-back is 5.56 diverse miles on soft surfaces. Enjoy!
Take Hwy 17 going South from Myrtle Beach. Huntington State Park is about 1.5 miles south of Murrell's Inlet. You will see the entrance to the Park on the left. If you pass the Brookgreen Gardens, you've gone too far.
Entrance to the park was $5 as of Summer 2004.
At the entrance, you will receive a map with the layout of the park. Drive to the Sandpiper Nature Trail, and park in the Education Center parking lot. The Nature Trail begins accross the street from the parking lot.
