If there could ever be a 5 star track, this must be it. Hayward Field was named after the Ducks' first track and field mentor, Bill Hayward, who reigned over the track program from 1904 to 1947. The site was originally constructed as a football field in 1919 when the east grandstand was built. The west grandstand, added in 1975, includes a press box at the concourse level and training facilities beneath the seating. In 1988 the track was converted to a 400-meter oval; a warm-up track was also added at this time. Coach Bill Bowerman's legacy from 1949 to 1972 was recognized with the 1991 addition of the Bowerman Family Building which includes offices, conference rooms, and locker rooms available for the athletes and coaching staff.
Ten thousand fans can currently enjoy this storied track venue. It has been the site of the three Olympic trials and eight NCAA championships, not to mention numerous other world-class track events such as the U.S. national championships, the National Masters Track and Field meet, the World Veteran Games and the Pan American Games trials.
Maintaining its aura as the Carnegie Hall of track and field, Hayward Field has been the site of countless world and national records over the years. But it has been the fans' rapport with the countless numbers of competitors that has contributed to Hayward Field's continuing reputation as one of the track's most popular sites in America today.
Hayward field is closed from 2:00pm until 6:00pm weekdays for Oregon varsity practices. Please check the events schedule on Hayward field's home site for track availability. Please avoid the track if possible the day before major meets. Track vacuuming is done at 6:00am the day before the meet. Mowing of the grass is usually done Monday, Wednesday, Friday before a meet. Please let our staff mow and ready the field between 8:00am and 2:00pm on those days.
Consult the University of Oregon's website for the Hayward Field Training and Maintenance Schedules.
