The Goose Island Turkey Trot is a great Thanksgiving Day 8k Road Race on a flat course. The course is run on roads also on a light gravel path. The Race Organizers encourage participants and spectators to bring cans of food on the day of the race to be donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Participants receive a 100% cotton long sleeve t-shirt, race number, entry into the event raffle and plenty of FREE post-race treats.

The course is USATF certified, with plenty of water on the course and at the finish. Participants in the 8K will be timed. Gift certificates for Brooks running shoes will be awarded to the top three men and women overall in the 8K Run. Medals will go to the top three men and women in the designated age groups in the 8K Run. Age group awards will be mailed. Results will be posted at Momentum and at on this web site.

More information can be found on the event website: http://www.caprievents.com/turkey/welcome.htm.

The 27th Annual Goose Island Turkey Trot 8K takes place on Thanksgiving in beautiful Lincoln Park. Parking is available at Lincoln Park Zoo on Cannon Drive, just south of Fullerton. There is a $12 charge. FREE neighborhood street parking is also available, but plan to arrive early.

I was lucky enough to participate in this race the day after an ice storm. The ice on the roads had cleared, but the gravel footpath through the park areas was covered in a sheet of ice and light snow. I wore some old flats that had great traction, but it was still difficult not to slip at times! I wanted this race to mark the end of my fall training, so I was trying to be competitive and was happy with the high level of competition in the race. I had a great pack of women to run with for the first 3/4\\'s of the race and then tried to go after the women\\'s leader. Even with the ice, this was a great race. I highly recommend as a pre-Turkey activity!
