Leaving the parking lot at George English Park, go directly to a side street that dead ends at the park entrance. Run down this side street until you reach Sunrise Blvd. Turn left at Sunrise Blvd. and run until Sunrise Blvd. dead-ends into Highway A1A. Cross A1A CAREFULLY!!!!!! Run to the right or south along the sidewalk near the Atlantic beach. Be alert for walkers, runners and people standing around the sidewalk or moving to and from the beach.
For a 3 mile run turn around at Las Olas Blvd. and return to the George English Park. For a 6 mile run continue to the Sheraton Hotel at Holiday Blvd., turn around there and run back to George English Park. The big advantage of this route is relatively few major road crossings (only Hwy A1A at Sunrise Blvd), a major problem for runners in urban South Florida.
There is a municipal parking lot with water fountains and bathrooms between Las Olas and Holiday Blvds.
The Greater Ft. Lauderdale Road Runners (GFLRR) meet every Thursday evening at 6:30 PM at George English Park for a fun run/walk along this route. GFLRR encourages the public to join the group for this exercise.
HWY AIA is well lighted and has pedestrian and street traffic all day long. However, remember the heat and humidity of South Florida and try to run before dawn or after dusk.
After the run there are numerous great restaurants along Sunrise Blvd. and A1A for recovery. Several restaurants along A1A near Las Olas Blvd. have Latino bands on the side walk. Every 4th Thursday the GFLRR adjourn to the Pizza Shack just east of the Intercostal Waterway bridge on Sunrise Blvd. at 8 PM!
Take the Sunrise Blvd. exit from I-95 or turn east on Sunrise Blvd. from US Hwy.#1 (Federal Highway). Stay in the left lane because you must soon turn left onto Bayview Drive opposite the Galleria Shopping Mall. Again stay left and turn into George English Park just after the street narrows to one lane.
There is free parking at George English Park. There is also a bathroom with water fountains at the park.
