Now in its 11th year, the Colorado Relay, a 24-hour, 170-mile team relay race, is an awesome team-event in Colorado. The course takes athletes of all abilities, across several mountain passes in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, from Idaho Springs to Glenwood Springs, CO. Most teams have 10 runners who each run three segments of the race, with a leg averaging in distance of five miles. A new division in 2006 allows a team to be anywhere from 6-12 runners, running in any order desired. We've called the division the "Non-Conformists".

An option for elite runners is to create an Ultra team of five runners. Teams in the Ultra "Classic" category, have runners responsible for one leg of the race that averages about 35 miles in length. Alternatively, a new category in 2006 has been created for Ultra Teams -- "Freestyle" -- which allows them to rotate through the legs as other teams, however, only with 5 runners (each runner runs 6 legs).

Regardless of the division, this event attracts people from all over the nation and is designed for both casual and competitive runners.

The Relay was created to support the Colorado Outward Bound School and its mission. Now, as Outward Bound Wilderness, we continue to impel our students into activities that enhance their individual character, develop confidence and make explicit their limitless potential. This race is meant to amaze you, so that at the finish line the challenges and accomplishments along the way have shown you a hint of what is possible. The starting line will be at Citizens' Park in downtown Idaho Springs, CO.

From Denver, take I-70 West to exit 241 A (about 40 miles). Follow the main road into town, when you reach a Y in the road, with a Safeway on your left, veer left onto Miner St. at the 7-11. Take a left onto 17th Ave. and the Van Parking will be an immediate right. Team Registration will be located directly behind Beau Jo's in the parking lot.
