The Cannon Valley Trail is a rails-to-trails path that parallels the Cannon River. Mostly surrounded by farmland, forests, pastures, and mashland, the path itself is quite flat and mostly shaded. The railroad mile markers are still there, and from my experience, they are accurate, which helps make Cannon Valley a great place for a long hard workout. Bikers and rollerbladers are common during warmer weather, and nordic skiiers take over in the winter, when they do not plow the path (and do not appreciate runners breaking up their snow tracks). Welch, Minnesota, is nearly 10 miles from Cannon falls and is a good place to shuttle back and forth with cars if you like. Great fall colors as the leaves change make this a scenic run. It is rarely crowded during the week. Trail information boards are provided at various access points.

The path runs between Cannon Falls and Red Wing, about 45 miles south of Minneapolis. Park in downtown Cannon Falls and find the trail adjacent to the Cannon River. The first mile marker is about 3/4 of a mile outside of town.
