The Burke Gilman Trail is a popular recreational trail for walkers, runners, cyclists, skaters and commuters. The trail is jointly maintained by Seattle Department of Transportation and Seattle Parks and Recreation.
The Burke, as it is popularly known, stretches from north Seattle's Fremont neighborhood 14 miles northeast around Lake Union, through the University of Washington, to Lake Washington and Kenmore. Here amid the bustling traffic of Lake City Way, it connects to the Sammamish River Trail, which follows the Sammamish Slough for 14 miles to the spacious open fields of Marymoor Park, King County?s grandest playground.
The most popular starting points are at Marymoor Park for Eastsiders and at the parking lot at Gas Works Park for city dwellers. The trail winds along a mostly brushy course to Kenmore, offering occasional views of Lake Washington. It becomes more scenic thereafter, breaking out into the open fields of the Sammamish Valley, past cow pastures and high-tech office facilities. Thanks to land acquisitions, this trail keeps expanding incrementally every year, gradually creeping both west and east. Ultimately, we hope it will form an unbroken link from Puget Sound to the crest of Snoqualmie Pass and beyond.
The trail is accessible at dozens of points along Lake Union, the University of Washington, Sand Point, Kenmore, and Redmond. Most people start at the trail's east end at Marymoor Park or at Gas Works Park on north Lake Union in Seattle.
