From the South Mesa Trailhead: Follow the Mesa Trail across South Boulder Creek and turn left onto the Towhee trail after 0.1 mile. Follow Towhee to its intersection with the Homestead trail and continue to the right. After 1.3 miles you will join the Mesa Trail.
Turn left onto the wide gravel trail and climb for 0.7 of a mile to a creek crossing and an abandoned cabin. This is the highpoint of the run. Shadow Canyon is on the left - turn Right onto the Mesa trail. Climb and descend steeply for ~1 mile to the Big Bluestem Trail.
Turn right onto the Big Bluestem trail and descend for 0.9 of a mile to rejoin the Mesa trail. Turn left and descend 0.8 mile on the Mesa trail back to the trailhead.The South Mesa Trailhead is located 1.7 miles west of Hwy 93 on Hwy 170/Eldorado Springs Drive.
From Boulder travel south on Broadway/Hwy 93 out of town to a stoplight at the intersection of Broadway/Hwy 93 and Hwy 170. Turn right and travel west to the trailhead.
From Denver exit Hwy 36 at the Foothills Parkway/Table Mesa and turn onto Table Mesa. Turn left, heading west toward Broadway/Hwy 93. Turn left, south, onto Broadway/Hwy 93 to a stoplight at the intersection of Broadway/Hwy 93 and Hwy 170. Turn right and travel west to the trailhead.
