South St. Vrain Creek flows down from Rocky Mountains and the Continental Divide from Brainard Lake. It flows directly east and merges with the Middle St. Vain Creek about 1/3 of the way to the town of Lyons. Just east of Lyons, the South St. Vrain merges with the North St. Vrain and flows east through Longmont.

In the lower sections thru Lyons you will find mostly brown trout with an occasional rainbow trout. The fishing can be pretty good thru Lyons in the heat of the summer as the banks are quite brushy and offer many shady spots. However, during runoff in the spring, forget about fishing this section as the combination of high water and brushy bank make it hard to access and not really much fun.

The access thru town (Lyons) is plentiful as the creek bisects several town parks and can easily be found. The access higher up can be found by taking Highway 7 towards Allens Park. The South St. Vrain parallels the highway for about 8 miles until the confluence with Middle St. Vrain Creek (then follows the Middle St. Vrain for a few more miles). There are plenty of pulloffs on the side of the road for access to this section. Above the confluence with the Middle St. Vrain, the highway parallels the Middle for about 4 miles and has access to that creek alongthe way, however it gets much smaller from here on up.

There is additional access for the South St. Vrain all the way up to the divide. It is just harder to reach and requires a hike, but it is a good way to get away from the crowds and the heat in the summer. In the upper sections you will find a mixture of cutthroat and brook trout. There is access from a trailhead off of CR 96 about 4.5 miles south on Highway 72. The upper part of the Middle can be accessed from a trailhead at Peaceful Valley.
