I did it. I spent 7 days on a road trip through southwestern Montana (and Yellowstone National Park)in the fall. I highly recommend it. In the fall many of the big rivers are easy to wade, summer is over and most of the tourists and other anglers are gone, and many of the guide and lodging rates are cheaper.
My tour started and basically ended in Bozeman, MT. I fished the Gallatin River, Firehole River (Yellowstone), Gibbon River (Yellowstone), Upper Madison River (Yellowstone), Lower Madison River, Ruby River, Beaverhead River, Clark Fork River, Bitterrot River, Rock Creek, and Yellowstone River.
My favorites were definitely the Beaverhead River, Madison River, and the Bitterroot River.
