The Third Flatiron is probably one of Boulder's most beloved and often climbed Flatirons. It is faintly marked with huge CU letters painted (and repainted) on it years ago. When not closed during raptor nesting season, there is usually always a line for the more popular routes on the Third Flatiron.

The East Face route is by far the most popular, but even at 5.4 it should not be taken lightly. However, with that said it has been done just about ever way possible - naked, on roller skates, during blizzards, under a full moon ... you name it and someone has done it on the Third Flatiron. It is also a popular solo and speed climb route for people into those things. Yvon Chouinard made it famous by calling it the "finest beginner's climb in the country."

Popular Routes

  • East Face (5.4R)
  • East Face Left (5.5R)
  • Friday's Folly (5.8)

Descent

All routes on the Third Flatiron require (two to) three rappels off large anchors over the back side of the Flatiron. Double ropes are required to make the rappel in two lengths. Be careful pulling your ropes - people have been known to get them stuck.

Directions

Chataugua Park is located in west-central Boulder off off Baseline Road - just look for the Flatirons and drive toward them. Once at Chataugua Park, head up the old (closed) asphalt road behind the ranger's station. At the Bluebell Shelter, follow signs to the Flatiron.
